Full bodied, loaded with intense ripe berry fruit, cassis, violets and a smoky richness, finishing with good length and firm tannins.

Wine Enthusiast Starts off as a closed, tight wine, aromatically speaking, and needs plenty of decanting to breathe, but once it starts to open, thereÕs an eruption of the most refined cassis and cedar aromas. In the mouth, this is an immense Cabernet, profoundly deep in blackberry, roasted coffee and dark chocolate flavors. It is also enormously tannic, and is effectively locked down. Nowhere near ready, although decanting will help it, but itÕs best to hold this magnificent wine until 2007, when it should start to open, and then for at least 10 additional years. Score: 95. —Steve Heimoff, August 01, 2006.

Wine Advocate The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Volcanic Hill (also the 30th anniversary cuvee of this 8 acre vineyard) reveals a saturated purple color as well as an explosive bouquet that is almost medieval in its black currant notes intermixed with distinctive spicy, earthy, smoky characteristics. Medium to full-bodied and rich, with low acidity, ripe fruit, and a dense, layered, impressive personality, it is more backward than the Gravelly Meadow, less elegant but more powerful and concentrated. Its elegance will take longer to emerge, but it should certainly be there. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020. Score: 92. —Robert Parker, August 31, 2005.

Wine Spectator Dark, rich and chocolaty, with a dense, compact, concentrated core of earthy currant, sage and wild berry. Mouthcoating tannins persist on the palate. Definitely needs time. Best from 2008 through 2016. 573 cases made. Score: 91. —James Laube, May 15, 2005.
