De Lisio Quarterback Red 2005
There are very few Australian wines that can boast 4 varieties deliberately blended together to achieve a wine that tastes so complete. This blend of Shiraz, Grenache, Merlot & Cabernet Sauvignon has good palate weight and structure without any hint of aggressive young tannins as they have been balanced out by the Grenache and Merlot. This wine is formulated to allow for early drinking however the addition of the Shiraz and in particular the Cabernet gives the wine focus, length and ageability. Aptly named Quarterback as the 4 varieties are in approximately equal proportions. This is blending at its wonderfully, challenging best. Wine Advocate An intriguing blend of Shiraz, Grenache, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon aged in mostly old French wood, the deep ruby/purple-tinged 2005 Quarterback reveals notions of new saddle leather, black currants, licorice, and spice box. Full-bodied as well as elegant, restrained, and Eurocentric in character, it should be consumed over the following 6-10 years. Score range: 90-92. Score: 92. —Robert Parker, October 2006.Wine Enthusiast This wine seamlessly blends four varieties—Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot—into an elegant mix of chocolate, cassis and plum flavor. It’s wonderfully supple and rounded in the mouth, finishing with lingering notes of smoke and cassis. Score: 90. November 15, 2007. |
